One-time purchase / 3 personal devices

VS Code showing a TypeScript file in HackerBlue: navy editor and side bar, steel-blue text, cyan accents and a blue status bar.

VS Code with HackerBlue installed and selected, on Linux.

How to install

Three steps in your device's terminal. Every command is exactly what you type; copy it, paste it, press Enter.

  1. Put the HackerBlue program on your device

    Linux or macOS: Terminal
    curl -fsSL https://hackerblue.dev/install.sh | sh
    Windows: PowerShell
    irm https://hackerblue.dev/install.ps1 | iex
  2. Sign in

    Terminal
    hackerblue login

A page opens in your browser; sign in to your Hacker Blue account and choose Approve.

  3. Install the VS Code theme

    Terminal
    hackerblue install vs-code

Reload any open VS Code windows.

VS Code's code command must be on your PATH: in VS Code, run Shell Command: Install 'code' command in PATH if you do not have it. Your settings file is backed up first, and only the one theme setting changes.

Updates come with your licence: hackerblue update vs-code when a newer version is out. hackerblue uninstall vs-code removes it and restores your previous theme selection, keeping your later settings edits. Every command, and the rest of the guide: the install guide.

VS Code, default and in HackerBlue

The same view twice. The switch changes only the theme.

VS Code with its default Dark Modern look: a TypeScript build file on a near-black editor with blue, orange and green syntax colours, the Explorer on the left and a dark status bar. The same build file in VS Code with HackerBlue: the editor on deep navy with steel-blue code and cyan keywords, navy side bars and a steel-blue status bar.

VS Code 1.104.3 running on Linux, the same build file in its default Dark Modern look and in HackerBlue. Captured from the running app in a throwaway profile.

VS Code belongs to its owner; Hacker Blue is not affiliated with or endorsed by it.

The theme

HackerBlue for VS Code is a dark colour theme for the whole editor: the side bar, tabs, status bar, panels, menus, diffs and the integrated terminal, plus syntax colours for the languages you write, including the extra detail language servers add through semantic highlighting.

Body text and comments keep at least 4.5:1 contrast against the editor background, so long sessions stay readable. It is a dark theme. The installer selects it for you and leaves the rest of your settings as they were; Preferences: Color Theme switches back at any time.
